Calculation Methodology

SMPTE/THX Viewing Distance & Photo Stream Rotation Model

Calculates 16:9 screen diagonal using SMPTE (30-degree field of view) and THX (36-degree) standards. Projector lumens are computed based on screen surface area and ambient foot-candles. Slideshow rotation divides total available seconds by slide transition timing.

Recommended Diagonal (inches) = Viewing Distance (feet) × 12 × 0.35. Projector Lumens = Screen Area (sq ft) × Ambient Foot-Candles (45–140). Slides per Hour = 3600 ÷ Slide Duration.
Industry Standards & Assumptions

Planning Assumptions Used in This Model

Guests upload an average of 0.85 to 1.1 photos per attendee across a 4-hour reception.
Slide transitions of 6 to 8 seconds allow comfortable viewing without stalling photo rotation.
Projectors require at least 3,500 ANSI lumens for dim ballrooms and 4,500+ ANSI lumens for rooms with ambient windows.
Practical Example
